Fire Grabs a Tie For Ninth Place at Camp LeJeune

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C.--The Southeastern men's golf team tied for ninth place overall in the Camp LeJeune Gold Championship, this past weekend, as seniors Drew Mathews and Matthew Jenkinson both earned Top 25 finishes individually.

The Fire shot a three round total of 875, with their best round of the tournament coming in round two, with a season low 281. SEU opened with a 295 and closed out the tournament with a 299.

SEU tied with Averett University (298-274-303) and finished 11 strokes behind eighth place finishers, Webber International (303-270-293-866).

Methodist University won the team championship, posting a remarkable 20 under-par team score (283-271-282-836). Methodist ended 16 strokes ahead of second place finishers, Oglethorpe University (289-267-296-852).

St. Thomas' Omar Tejeira won the individual tournament championship, defeating Lee University's JB Eksteen and Methodist's Dakun Chang in a sudden death playoff. Tejeira shot an opening round 64, which was the lowest round of the tournament. He posted an eight under-par 206 (64-67-75) overall.

Mathews and Jenkinson were SEU's top finishers, as they tied for 23rd place overall at 216. Mathews' best round was a second round 70, while he posted a 73 in both the first and final rounds. Jenkinson had his best individual performance of the season, shooting a first round 71, a second round 73, while closing out the tournament with an even round 72.

Isaac Spencer and J.D. Cobb both had terrific second round's of 70. Spencer, tied for 39th place overall at 221 (75-70-76) while Cobb tied for 54th place at 224 (76-70-78).

Freshman, Linzy Clark, also had a nice second round, shooting a one under-par 71. Clark ended tied for 70th place, posting a 228 (77-71-80).

SEU will be back in action, April 14-15, when they will compete in the Bash at the Beach, hosted by Embry-Riddle University, in Daytona, Fla.
