LAKELAND, Fla-- The Southeastern women's soccer team played in overdrive Saturday afternoon, defeating conference opponent Florida Memorial, 3-1, to earn their first home victory of the season, and keep their hopes alive of clinching a Sun Conference Tournament berth.
Southeastern had its offense firing on all cylinders, and its defense playing like a stonewall. The Lady Fire outshot their opponents 28-15 and dominated possession throughout the game.
Southeastern got on the scoreboard when Melodie Kepto connected on a cross from Anna Hall. Kepto sent the ball just over FMU’s goalie Natalia Gomez at 12:45 of the first half. Kepto's goal was the only goal of the half, but SEU clearly dominated the half and had all the momentum on their side heading into the locker room.
Southeastern continued to pound away at Florida Memorial, midway through the second half, as Megan Byrd sent a free kick from nearly 50 yards downfield. Jessica Crowe connected on the kick and passed to Ally Larese, who found the back of the net on her shot giving SEU a 2-0 advantage. Byrd and Crowe were both awarded assists on the play.
Kayce Martin then scored off of a rebound at 78:23, to give the Lady Fire a 3-0 lead.
Everything was simply going Southeastern's way in this game, the only thing that did not go their way was the defense earning a shutout. Late in regulation, the Lady Lions made an offensive charge, as a FMU player tried to cross the ball to the front of the net, SEU's Martin accidently deflected the ball right into the Southeastern net. The goal officially went as an own goal, at 82:57.

Florida Memorial is now 3-9-1 overall and 3-6-1 within the conference. They are now mathematically eliminated from Sun Conference Tournament contention with the loss.
Southeastern improves to 6-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Lady Fire has one regular season game left to play, next Thursday in Babson Park, Fla., versus Webber International University. The game was shaping up as a showdown for the final spot within the upcoming conference tournament, but Webber was upset by Johnson & Wales, 3-1, on Saturday to put the Lady Warriors now in a major disadvantage. Now all that Southeastern needs in order to earn their first ever trip to The Sun Conference Tournament, is Webber to lose to No. 11 Northwood University, on Sunday.
